Healthy Breakfast -Ayurvedic Dinacharya

Pratah Bhojan

Breakfast, known as “Pratah Bhojan” in Ayurveda, is considered an essential part of daily routine (dinacharya) to kickstart the day with energy, balance the doshas, and promote overall well-being. Even in modern times and modern science, breakfast is promoted as the most important meal of the day.

Ideal time for Breakfast according to ayurveda is between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, during the Kapha period of the morning.

  1. As part of ayurvedic dinacharya, choice of food is also important.
  • Generally choose warm and Nourishing cooked foods that are easy to digest.
  • Preferably use fresh, seasonal ingredients that are locally produced.
  • Dosha-Specific Ayurveda recommends to choose foods that balance your predominant dosha:
    • Vata: Warm, moist, and grounding foods like oatmeal, rice porridge, cooked fruits, and nuts.
    • Pitta: Cooling and calming foods like sweet fruits, dairy, and whole grains.
    • Kapha: Light, warm, and stimulating foods like spicy teas, steamed vegetables, and lighter grains like millet or quinoa.
  1. Eat a moderate portion that satisfies hunger without overloading the digestive system. Ayurveda says eat only till you are two thirds full, keep one third empty.
  2. Mindful Eating:
    • Chew Thoroughly: Chew food well to aid digestion.
    • Avoid Distractions: Eat in a calm environment without distractions like TV or smartphones.
    • Focus on Food: Pay attention to the flavours, textures, and smells of the food.
  3. Hydration: Start the morning with a glass of warm water to hydrate and stimulate digestion.

Some Ayurvedic Breakfast Ideas:

  • Vata-Balancing: Warm dalia with ghee, cinnamon; a handful of soaked almonds and other dry fruits, warm and fatty is good for vata predominant
  • Pitta-Balancing: Ripe fruits like melons, mangoes, or berries; whole grain roti with a light spread of ghee or coconut oil.
  • Kapha-Balancing: Warm millet porridge with ginger, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon; herbal tea with a pinch of black pepper.

By incorporating an Ayurvedic breakfast into your daily routine, you can support your body’s natural rhythms, balance doshas,  enhance digestion, and promote overall well-being.
