Bathing is the most important self care routine in Indian culture. We Indians take baths at least once a day. It’s not only important for bodily hygiene but connected to spiritual and psychological well being. Bathing in morning kick starts the day on a positive vibe and infuses body and mind with energy.
Let’s find out about Ayurvedic bath, also known as “Snana,” which is an important part of daily routine (dinacharya) that promotes physical and mental well-being.
Steps for an Ayurvedic Bath:
- Preparation:
- Abhyanga (Oil Massage):\as we have discussed in detail previously, do the Abhyanga massage and wait for 15-29 minutes for oils to absorb in skin.
- Bathing:
- Water Temperature: Use warm water for the body and cool water for the head. Avoid using excessively hot water as it can aggravate Pitta dosha and dry out the skin.
- Herbal Powders or Scrubs: Use herbal powders (like chickpea flour, sandalwood powder, or a mixture of Ayurvedic herbs) to cleanse the skin. These can be used instead of or in addition to soap.
- Gently Scrub: Use a gentle, circular motion to scrub the body, focusing on areas prone to dirt and sweat.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure that all the oil and herbal powder is thoroughly rinsed off the body.
- Post-Bath Care:
- Drying: Pat the body dry with a soft towel. Avoid vigorous rubbing.
- Moisturise: If needed, apply a light moisturiser or body lotion to keep the skin hydrated.
